Post mortem carte de visite – for sale on eBay at time of writing

***
I found this memento mori photo on eBay
(whilst actually looking for shoes, the algorithms clearly knowing what I like) and it’s still for sale at the current time.

This poor chap was only 34 when he died in Paris in 1885. The seller has helpfully included a photo of the back of the print, which tells us that the deceased was one Alfred Jules Montel – I’ve had a quick google but can’t find any further details, not helped by the fact that there were clearly a lot of Montels in the area around that time.

It’s strange to think that any one of us could have ancestors whose memento mori photos are doing the rounds like this. Names and home towns change so much over the generations that whenever I post up a new photo a little part of me wonders whether the person’s descendants could be reading, completely oblivious to the fact they’re staring at Great Aunt Bess or whatever. It’s a strange world.

This rather unusual memento mori carte de visite is, I think, from the Frecker collection. It’s rather odd in that the gentleman in the image appears to have been laid out on a damask curtain! The positioning is odd enough that I would usually have suspected the subject was actually alive, but the ‘set’ of his face suggests otherwise.

On the upside, the card itself is unusually helpful, giving us both the date and location. Perhaps they just liked fancy patterns in Missouri back then?

A DEATH THAT GOES AROUND THE WORLD

It was the evening of December 28, feast of the Holy Innocents, in 1952. The coffin with the mortal remains of the now-servant of God Josefina Vilaseca Alsina arrived at the cemetery of her native town, Horta d Avinyó, in the Catalan region Of Bages. A dense burial procession took the long journey from the parish church to the cemetery.

Crowds also followed the funeral procession to the church and then to the cemetery of this city, where they performed the autopsy before transferring it to their home town.

Why this large crowd? Who was this Josefina? What had happened?

A frail virgin had died martyr as a result of the wounds caused by Josep Garriga, infuriated because she had not allowed him to satisfy his libidinal desires.

Josefina had been sent by her mother to the Salabernada farmhouse, in the municipality of Artés, adjoining Horta, to help and accompany the owner, Dolors Guardiola. Josep Garriga, who was there, was an orphan since the age of nine, illiterate and neglected in religion. At that time he was already twenty-four years old and had become infatuated with Josefina, a young woman of twelve. When Josefina went to her house on weekends, she told her mother she did not want to go back to Salabernada. His mother answered: Patience that is for a short time. It is known that another girl from Horta, Felicitat, endured only one week in Salbernada, before Josefina.

On December 4, when the owner of the house had left to shop for Artés, Josep Garriga used this circumstance to force Josefina. But she resisted, crying, “Not this! God does not want this! It is sin!” Meanwhile, the young virgin tried to escape the greedy claws of carnal desire.

Josep, for a time, ran after Josefina in the large mansion, causing several injuries with a kitchen knife. When she came to the room next to the kitchen, where they used to sew and do other needlework and crochet, which in principle could have been a safe haven once the door key had been locked, the evil aggressor prevented her from locking herself in with his foot. Then he lunged at the fragile victim, who fell immolated, bleeding near the brazier.

The young man, believing her dead, left her and, with all his coolness, went to his tasks. He came back again to make sure she was not alive. Then she lay still, making herself appear dead, so he would not get mad at her again and finish her off.

When Dolors returned, she was surprised that Josefina was not there to receive her. Uneasy, she begins to call her, as she climbs the stairs to the first floor, where there is the large dining room, the kitchen and the rooms (usual in large Catalan country houses). Upon hearing it, Josefina moves as she can to make noise and get Dolors’ attention. This was how Dolors found the dramatic consequences of unbridled passion.

Josefina, although it seems incredible, is still alive. Dolors reacts quickly and ties a handkerchief around her badly wounded neck, puts her on the bed and locks the door. Josefina, as a result of the severed trachea, could not speak.

By means of a sign-language dialogue, she manages to communicate the identity of the perpetrator. Dolors confronts her employee: What have you done? He replied surprised to find himself trapped: So, is she still alive?

Then began a frantic attempt to save Josefina’s life. A taxi took a doctor and the civil guard to the enclave where the Casanova i Riusec houses were. From there, on foot, they marched towards the farmhouse, scene of the brutal aggression.

Priests improvised a stretcher as transport – Josefina was taken by taxi to be transferred to Artés and from here, by ambulance, to Manresa, where she was admitted to the Sant Josep Clinic. The rapid surgical intervention gave a good result and the girl improved day by day. But on Christmas day, it got worse. A new operation was useless and the girl died.

Josep, the aggressor, collaborated in the tasks of giving part of what happened, as well as in the transfer of Josefina so that she could be attended to. He repented and received Josefina’s explicit pardon. He was tried and sentenced to prison. After serving his sentence, he married, he was an honest construction worker. He died of a fatal accident at work.

The exemplary death of Josefina and the fame of her virtues soon spread throughout the city and the whole region, through the bishopric of Vic, Catalonia, Spain and beyond. From all over the world, there is still a message of interest for her testimony of holiness, which hopes to be recognized by the church with beatification and later canonization, for which the process is well advanced.

A teenager like all in a Christian family.

Having managed to find the folder on my computer desktop that holds copies of the old Skull Illusion posts (a harder job than it sounds because my desktop currently has 551 icons on it – yes I am ridiculously disorganised), I figured it makes sense to repost some of them here, as many people won’t have seen either the text or the images before.

This one has always stuck in my mind, for fairly obvious reasons.

Despite having run The Skull Illusion for several years now and seen hundreds, if not thousands, of corpses in that time, I have never become hardened to the grim reality of death. This is a good thing, I think – if ever the day came that I felt nothing when looking at post mortem images such as this then I would take it as a sign that it was time to give up.

I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I came across this photograph whilst trawling the net for new post mortem photos. How on earth could an entire family have been wiped out at once, and such an age range?

The original image was on Reddit and had only the information ‘Mrs Day and her seven children in the funeral home’ attached to the bottom (there are only five children visible in the photo but the legs of a sixth can be seen on the very right, and presumably the seventh is even closer to the camera). Amazingly, an internet search immediately brought up the story – and what a tragic one it is.

From The Winnipeg Tribune, Dec 16th 1929 (all phrasing sic):

AXEMAN SLAYS MOTHER AND HER SEVEN CHILDREN Father, Throat Slashed, Found Wandering on Streets at ” Three Rivers, Que. ALL EIGHT VICTIMS NEARLY DECAPITATED Parent Confesses Murdering Whole Family, Say Police Special to The Winnipeg Tribune TI1KEE ItlVEUS, Que., Dec. 16 Their throats slashed with an axe, a mother and her sevan children were found dead in their beds here early today. The father, Andrew Day, his throat also gashed, was found wandering in the streets and was rushed to a hospital. Day appeared dazed and mentally unbalanced, but confessed ho “murdered the whole family,” police said. Day could speak only with difficulty, but wrote a confeaalon on a cardboard box and signed It, police said. Although his condition at first appeared serious, ho will recover. It was said at the hospital. Investigation Begun Police today began a thorough Investigation Into the brutal murders. Mrs. Day and her seven children, ranging In age from one to 14 years, ‘ AH were found dead In beds In threa rooms of their home. All were horribly mutilated, having ono or more cuts about the throat, indicating that the slayer evidently .tried to decapitate’ the vletlma. The three bedrooms where tha bodies were found presented a gruesome spectacle, blood staining the bed clothing and lying In pout) on the floor. ‘ , , Many Bloodstains ‘ Bloodstains also were discovered In other rooms of the house. 1 ‘. Day, ordinarily a quiet, mild – irutn – tiered man, la reported to have lost ‘ all his money in the recent stock market crash and since then had been very depressed. It also was stated that be had been unable to sleep for days. Police believe the shock of losing all his money no doubt affected the man s brain and, crazed by remorse, he slew his entire family and Then I tried to end his own life. The family had lived here for about four years.

I’m sure that this was only one of many similar tragedies during the Depression (and indeed, that have occurred through time immemorial), but that row of little faces, ohhh…

The problem I have with restarting the Skull again is that the original archive holds so many photos that I might end up repeating them without realising. They’re often very similar, making it difficult to figure out whether they seem familiar because I’ve actually published them before, or just because the way that memento mori images are posed means they do tend to look alike. Oh well, at least they’ll see the light of day again one way or another.

I have no background information whatsoever on this photo – it appears on several Russian websites, but neither the people in the pic or their clothing looks Russian to me. And although the child initially appears to be female, on closer inspection I think it might actually be a boy.

Any suggestions?

It feels rather strange writing this post! I haven’t added to The Skull Illusion for several years (mostly because some asshat hacked the original site beyond repair), but as I still get internet traffic looking for it on a daily basis I knew I wanted to resurrect it again one day. And today is that day. I still own the domain name, so for the time being have set it to divert to this section of Sex, Death, Rock’n’Roll.

ANYWAY. First post mortem photo hunting session of the new era – I love this one, which I’m assuming shows brothers. The deceased appears to have his hands wrapped which I haven’t seen before but I would imagine it was in order to hide discolouration.

If anyone has any ideas as to the era or location of this image I’d love to hear them!
